A Columbus Grove, Ohio family has the unusual distinction of sending six boys to the military. Eugene, Edward, Harold, James, Raymond and Richard Halker, sons of Leo and Frances Halker, served their country during the World War II and Korean War periods. Edward Halker was drafted in September of 1942 and was sent to Hill Field at Ogden, Utah, to haul supplies for the air base there. Later, he was sent to Pueblo Air Base in Colorado to train for overseas duty. In July of 1943, Edward was sent to England with the 2073rd Truck Company, hauling supplies for the 8th Air Force. He was stationed at the Burtonwood Supply and Repair Depot at Warrington, England. Edward arrived in Lima with his discharge at 7:30am on Christmas Day of 1945.
